Battery Waste Management Rules 2022: What PIBOs Must Know

India's Battery Waste Management Rules 2022

The Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) represent India's most comprehensive framework for battery waste.

Categories Covered

The rules apply to all battery types:

1. **Portable Batteries** — Consumer devices, power tools

2. **Automotive Batteries** — Lead-acid batteries in vehicles

3. **Industrial Batteries** — Stationary storage, forklifts

4. **Electric Vehicle (EV) Batteries** — Fastest-growing category

EPR Targets for Battery Producers

Battery producers (PIBOs) must collect and recycle a specified percentage of batteries placed on market in previous years. For 2024-25:

  • Portable Batteries: **60%** collection target
  • Automotive Batteries: **70%** collection target
  • Industrial & EV Batteries: **50%** collection target

  • These targets increase annually toward 100%.
